Signet Books began in 1948 and lasted through their vintage period until 1959. Their collectible books continued into the mid-1970's. Although they published many noted authors such as Jim Thompson and Horace McCoy, one author made this publisher wealthy -- his name was Mickey Spillane. His first book I, The Jury established sales records that had never been seen before in the paperback industry. His next eight books did the same. After this, hardboiled writers of mysteries represented a majority of Signet's revenue. This line also covered every other genre and had an oustanding stable of artists such as: James Avati, Robert Maguire and James Meese. |
