Digests were an over-sized paperback, approximately 51/2" x 71/2". These paperbacks, because of their size, could not be displayed in book store racks. They were usually printed in smaller quantities and sold from under the counter at tobacco stores and magazine displays. Hundreds of publishers printed books using this format and were primarily marketed for the male reader. Many collectible authors appeared in these lines such as: Raymond Chandler, James M. Cain, Paul Cain and Dashiell Hammett. The covers featured outstanding artwork by talents such as: Rudolph Belarski, George Gross, Rudy Nappi and Reginald Heade. |
